Tennis Australia Mike Barrell Hot Shots Workshop

P7220058.JPGYesterday (Sunday 14/8) the Toptenn Tennis Academy Coaching Team attended Tennis Australia’s Mike Barrell Workshop on MLC Hot Shots at Melbourne Park from 9:30 to 3:30pm.

Mike is the world expert in Hot Shots and coloured ball tennis programs. Based in the UK, Mike has taught for over 20 years and currently directs Evolve9 which provides consultancy to clubs, organisations and National Associations. Mike has presented at numerous National and International conferences in China, Holland, Estonia, UK, USA, Norway, Lithuania, Spain and Hungary. Mike also works for the LTA as one of a team of coach education tutors, delivering coach education, certification and training.  An LTA Level III Licensed Coach, he was also the 2007 PTR Professional of the Year. Mike owned his own community based tennis club for over 10 years and now manages the Under 10s program at the West Hants Club in Bournemouth where he still works on court each week.

The workshop covered the benefits of modified tennis for children, why it’s important to run competitions, the best age appropriate formats for red, orange and green stages and how to best plan and run your event. Toptenn had a magnificent day exploring and discussing even more ways to facilitate children from Red Ball Aussie Mozzie programs, Orange, Green and Yellow ball Hot Shots Programs and Team Toptenn Accelerations Squads to enjoy ‘the game’ of tennis. Mike spoke in regards to the Toptenn philosophy; helping students to continue to enjoy and play tennis throughout their life through building their technical skills, their confidence, their love of the game, , their tactical understanding and by providing an opportunity to suit everybody’s needs, regardless of their skill level or experience. We did not want the workshop to end. Please visit http://toptenn.com/latest-news.htm for more pictures and more information about the Mike Barrell Workshop.

Mike spoke passionately about encouraging all students to try Red, Orange, Green or Yellow Hot Shots competitions, depending upon their category. Like in all sports we want tennis players to not only learn how to play, but to use these modified programs to experience real tennis = “They won’t survive the frost if you don’t let them out of the greenhouse”.

We are looking forward to putting many of these new exciting ideas into practice in all of our coaching programs over the coming weeks.

The Toptenn Tennis Academy currently runs MLC Hot Shots coloured competition at:

  • The Burwood Tennis Club (Monday 4:00 – 4:45, Friday 4:00 – 5:30)
  • The Deepdene Tennis Club (Wednesday 5:00 – 6:30)
  • The North Kew Tennis Club (Thursday 4:00 – 5:30)

Please call Toptenn Tennis on 9830 6618 to trial any of these programs.

Look forward to seeing all of you on the court.

Happy Hitting

Toptenn Tennis Academy Vs Tiebreak

Tennis Academy Challenge

Last Sunday (17/7/11) the Toptenn Tennis Academy and the Tiebreak Tennis Academy locked horns in a blockbuster Academy Challenge at the Elsternwick Park Tennis Centre.

8 players learning with the Tennis Australia Hot Shots Orange Ball, 8 players learning with the Hot Shots Green Ball and 8 players learning with the Yellow Ball where personally selected by their coaches to represent their tennis school as a member of their Academy Representative Team. Please see below to see Toptenn’s full Representative Team

Toptenn’s Orange and Green Ball teams proved too strong for a very competitive Tiebreak line-up, recording narrow but inspiring overall victories. However, the Tiebreak Yellow Ball Team managed to steady the ship wrestling some hard fought sets over a ferocious Toptenn. Only 21 games separated both Academy’s at the end of the days play. The final scores were 1433 to 1454, with Tiebreak prevailing (only just!). However, Toptenn did take home the spoils for the Nintendo Wii Tennis Championship.

The Tiebreak Tennis Academy put on a magnificent day, led by Head Coach Rob Turner with just under 3,000 matches of tennis played among 50 players. Congratulations to everyone who participated. Not only did they play some magnificent and exciting tennis, but everyone demonstrated tremendous sportsmanship and respect towards their rival academy. For more information and photos on the day please see toptenn.com.

Toptenn would also like to pass on a very special congratulations to our 3 players judged to be the best Toptenn performer in their division. Congratulations to:
Orange Ball: Jamie Tassone (Burwood TC)
Green Ball: Nathan Dimmatina (St Thomas the Apostle)
Yellow Ball: Lauren Huggins (Burwood TC)

The highest performing players competing for Toptenn in our Academy Challenges will be selected in November, 2011 for the All-Academy Super Challenge at Melbourne Park. These worthy students will be competing against the Futures Tennis Academy, VicTen and the Tiebreak Tennis Academy on the Australian Open ‘Blue Goo’ Courts, just like Nadal, Djokovic, Stosur, Federer, Sharapova and many more of their tennis heroes.

The Toptenn Representative Team:
Yellow: Erin McPherson (Captain, North Kew), Lauren Huggins (Burwood), Lachlan Allan (Burwood), Rachel Xu (Deepdene), Adrian Xu (Deepdene), Adam Reynolds (Forest Hill), Max Chintock (Aqualink), Conlan Forsyth (Burwood)

Toptenn Director Peter Owen had this to say regarding the new courts:

"The courts have come up great. The bounce is true and fair for all game styles and the drainage is awesome. It is so good not to have to worry about water and dust and to have clean shoes and brick-dust free eyes and nostrils at the end of the day. As a coach and through our new consultancy firm Tiebreak Consulting we will be recommending your product and work ethic to all concerned. It is so good to deal with someone personally involved in the project and with such a relaxed and positive attitude.

Toptenn Named as Hot Shots Ambassador

‘Tennis Australia has announced Toptenn as 1 of 12 Hot Shots Ambassadors Australia-Wide. Toptenn was the first Victorian Tennis School to embrace Hot Shots, and has since incorporated it into our junior coaching programs and coaching syllabus. Toptenn is honoured to have been elected and would like to thank Natalie and Peter for all their hard-work in the program. We believe Hot Shots tennis is essential to understanding, applying and building rallying, point-play and ultimately match-play. There seems to be an inconsistency in tennis regarding the number of students who have lessons and the number of students that, in some capacity, use these skills and play the game. Hot Shots bridges the gap.

Toptenn runs Hot Shots Social on Tuesday afternoons from 4:45-6:15pm and Friday afternoons from 4:00 – 6:00 at the Burwood Tennis Club for just $10 per session. Tennis Australia Hot Shots is Tennis Australia’s grass roots participation initiative. It aims to introduce and facilitate junior students in rallying and playing the ‘game’ of tennis by creating more opportunities and more supportive environments. For more information please visit http://www.tennis.com.au/pages/default.aspx?id=3&PageID=11903.’

The Show Down series is designed to showcase a cross-section of players from each Academy and provide them with invaluable match experience in a very social and interactive environment.

Show down 7 was an absolute "rip-snorter". Going in the head to head battle was tied at 3 wins all over the past 6 years.

Toptenn held the trophy after convincingly winning showdown 6 at Scotch College!

Despite strong performances from our higher levels, the Victorian Tennis Academy were too good on a perfect day at Scotch.

Through an initiative of Simon Bythe on behalf of the Burwood Tennis Club, and Tennis Victoria, three schools- Wattle Park Primary, Hartwell Primary, and Ashburton Primary School- have participated in an annual Super-Challenge at the Burwood Tennis Club.

It has been a huge success with Hartwell and Ashburton sharing the honours and Wattle Park getting closer every year.

In 2005 the preliminary round was held on October 19 with the finals on Sunday October 23. Hartwell were victorious in a closely fought final.

Who will win in 2006. Come on Wattle Park!
